Far from the sun, on a voyage towards translucency.
Aphelion brings together the legendary New Mexico ether-drone duo Voice of Eye, Buchla master Thomas Dimuzio and spiritual throat singer Soriah in an extraordinary long-form collaboration.
The project began in 2021, when Voice of Eye’s Jim Wilson proposed working with Thomas Dimuzio on a deep-space composition combining modern Buchla electronics with 1970s-era Korg synthesisers. Soriah subsequently joined the project, bringing his distinctive throat singing and organic vocal techniques as a counterpoint to the ethereal electronic drones. Bonnie McNairn later added a further contrasting vocal presence.
Several pieces originated in live collaborations between Soriah and Thomas Dimuzio at Gench Studio, before being further developed and transformed by Voice of Eye. The result is an intricate synthesis of analogue and modern electronics, archaic vocalisations, instrumental textures and ethnically inspired sounds.
Moving between dark ambient, ritual music and cosmic drone, Aphelion encompasses the tribal pulse of “Pulse Array”, the expansive ambience of “Auracite”, the harsher territories of “Keplar Drift”, before culminating in the cataclysmic finale of “Syzygz.” Ancient voices and organic textures intertwine with deep-space electronics to create a work that feels simultaneously archaic and futuristic — ritualistic, immersive and profoundly otherworldly.
The striking artwork by Kati Astraeir uses two special metallic Pantone colours, complemented by packaging design from Thomas Dimuzio and Tilmann Benninghaus.
6 tracks. 61:30 minutes. CD comes in a 6-panel digi-sleeve.
