Waeltaja - Centuries Of Sorrow

Finnish dungeon synth project Waeltaja ventures into colder and more introspective territory with Centuries Of Sorrow, an immersive journey through melancholy, solitude and distant imagined landscapes.

Originally self-released digitally in 2024 and now presented on CD by Misantropia Records, the album moves beyond traditional dungeon synth into a more spacious and abstract form of dark ambient electronics.

Long, sweeping layers of synthesiser unfold gradually across extended compositions, while sparse melodies and restrained percussion drift through an atmosphere of profound melancholy and longing. Rather than relying heavily on the medieval-inspired themes traditionally associated with dungeon synth, Centuries Of Sorrow allows its music to breathe, creating vast spaces of ethereal sound and slow-moving texture.

There are echoes of old-school dungeon synth throughout, but also traces of ambient and Berlin School electronics, resulting in music that feels simultaneously ancient and strangely timeless.

Cold, minimal and deeply atmospheric, Centuries Of Sorrow is a journey through imagined memories, forgotten landscapes and the lingering weight of things long since lost.
